Tong Yang Shabu-Shabu & Unlimited Barbecue in SM City Fairview

Tong Yang is a popular buffet and shabu-shabu restaurant, as such, it’s a name that easily comes into mind when one thinks of unlimited grilled food and soups.

Our experience at Tong Yang Shabu-Shabu & Unlimited Barbecue

We’ve been to Tong Yang Shabu-Shabu & Unlimited Barbecue once and that was in their Jupiter restaurant in Makati City. We completely enjoyed our experience there and we found the food and the service to be unforgettable.

We liked the fact that there were countless choices of meats, seafood, and vegetables. The buffet table was laid out with fresh and uncooked choices but they were so many, we didn’t know where to begin.

We tried our best to taste almost everything but our bellies can only hold so much. Unfortunately, I found out around the latter part of 2020 that it already closed down, most likely a casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope its closure is temporary though.

Anyway, Khris & I wanted to relive that wonderful experience at Tong Yang Shabu-Shabu in Jupiter so we made a plan to eat at their outlet in SM City Fairview, which was just near our house.

We do our groceries at SM City Fairview so we figured we could just make a quick run at the supermarket then eat at Tong Yang Shabu-Shabu. That plan happened last Valentine’s Day so, yeah, that was our date.

Just like any other establishment these days, Tong Yang Shabu-Shabu & Unlimited Barbecue is also implementing strict health and safety protocols. They only accept a limited number of diners and the tables are spaced apart.

We were also given a guideline or a briefing that movement should be in a single direction around the buffet table, which meant that people getting food shouldn’t be moving toward each other.

We were also given a checklist of food so that we could already order in advance the cooked items, such as the appetizers, noodles, and dim sums. Lastly, all tables had tongs for the exclusive use of customers on that table, unlike previously when there were common tongs in each food tray on the table. In our case, there were two tongs on our table.

In the end, it was still a good experience. The ambiance is fairly good; it wasn’t spectacular but it wasn’t harried like in other buffet restaurants. Plus, there were fewer people which was good because it wasn’t crowded.

What we liked about Tong Yang Shabu-Shabu & Unlimited Barbecue is that the food is still served at a buffet table for customers to get, unlike in other similar restaurants where food is either served in small portions or is attended to by a server. Here at Tong Yang Shabu-Shabu & Unlimited Barbecue, it still felt like we were eating in a normal buffet restaurant.

Furthermore, the service is good, fast, and efficient. All our requests were provided to us without having to ask for them twice.

Tong Yang Shabu-Shabu’s menu is composed of the following all-you-can-eat items:

  • Vegetables (Chinese cabbage, carrots, sliced taro, spinach, water spinach, and lettuce, just to name some)
  • Mushrooms (button mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, black fungus)
  • Meat (sausages, hotdogs, pork belly, chicken, and chicken liver, to name a few)
  • Seafood (clams, oysters, shrimps, squid, salmon belly)
  • Dim sums (squid balls, lobster balls, fish balls, taro balls, etc.)
  • Various types of noodles

At an affordable price of only P449 per person, you can already fest on these items so it's really worth it.

For first-timers at Tong Yang, it might be hard to choose where to start but you can begin with the hotpot soup base: choice of chicken, sinigang, spicy sate, vegetarian, kimchi, and Taiwan Mala.

Our server recommended sinigang so that’s what we had. To the soup base, we added Hong Kong noodles, vegetables, shrimps, and seafood balls. We loved this combination, especially the flavorful noodles and the dim sums. However, the soup was a little too salty so we had to add water to balance it out. Otherwise, the flavors are good and complement each other.

When our starters finally arrived, we helped ourselves to the delicious vegetable okoy, siomai, and maki slices, all of which we enjoyed with gusto.

We also missed cooking our own food so we took advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the fresh mushrooms, meat, seafood slices, and seafood balls that we barbecued on the grill.

We enjoyed this meal at Tong Yang. It may not be the most magnificent lunch date but Khris and I enjoyed each other’s company while eating. We loved the food as most of the selections were our favorites in barbecue buffet restaurants.

The only issue that we had was that they weren’t refilling the food trays when it was at least 30 minutes before the cut-off time. Although we were already full by that time, we can hear other diners audibly complaining. All in all, we had a nice experience in this Tong Yang branch.
